Priority 1: Increasing the workforce
Already a successful project in central Scotland, ESF assistance has been awarded to Barnardos to roll-out the project throughout the Highlands Islands.
The project equips disaffected young people with the skills, experience and opportunities to access independent, sustainable employment.  It effectively addresses issues at the root of social exclusion and assists young people to overcome disadvantage.  The project is delivered in partnership with Scottish and Southern Energy, and associated employers, who will guarantee employment for young people who graduate from Youthbuild.

2: Investing in the Workforce

This project will provide social enterprises and SMEs in communities throughout the Highlands and Islands with the means of becoming dynamic through a sustainable and credible way of doing business by ensuring that those leading the organisations have the necessary leadership and enterprise skills.
Specifically, the project aims to: (1) invest in the leadership skills and confidence of managers; (2) build the sustainability of social enterprises and businesses via increased knowledge and understanding of business and enterprise tools and approaches; (3) stimulate the growth of social entrepreneurship and the social economy.
Delivery is learner centred and focused around the themes of leadership, enterprise, peer support and social impact.  Ongoing support is provided by designated mentors to ensure progression and contact will be maintained after learning ceases to encourage commitment to lifelong learning.

3: Improving Access to Lifelong Learning

This project involves the production and delivery of online language learning materials together with a tutor training programme.  The beneficiaries are learners of English or Gaelic (or both) who may be migrants into the region from overseas or other parts of the United Kingdom.
An increased demand for more support for Gaelic learners and their tutors is pressing at a regional and national/international level.  In addition, migration patterns into the Programme area have created a need for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) provision.
Following receipt of the 2007 European Award for Languages, Sabhal mòr Ostaig and training partner Cothrom aim to train Gaelic and ESOL tutors and learners in media technology; encourage knowledge and skills transfer between English and Gaelic tutors; develop up-to-date learning resources for Gaelic and English learners; and stimulate community archive development.
